History of Los Angeles
Prior to the European exploration, the city was inhabited by the
Chumash and
Tongva Native American tribes. The tribes were settled in the coastal area of L.A. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to claim the southern California regions. After the Europeans contact, the people of the land were known as Gabrielinos and Fernandenos. The California Gold Rush of 1849, brought in many settlers who flooded the city. The history of Los Angeles has been associated with the eras of the Spanish and the Mexican. Alpheus P. Hodges was elected the first mayor of los Angeles in 1850.
